What Swimming Pool Accessories Do I Need?

Before starting to build your beautiful new pool, it’s important to know about pool maintenance and what to purchase to keep your pool in pristine condition.

With an abundance of swimming pool accessories on the market today it can be overwhelming trying to make out which ones are best suited to your needs, and which ones are a waste of money.

In this article, we guide you through the jungle of available pool accessories and outline exactly what you need to properly clean and maintain your little slice of backyard paradise.

Pool Covers

If you’re looking to minimise both the cost and time of your pool maintenance, a pool cover is essential. The right pool cover will help maintain the water temperature, reduce the number of pool chemicals you need and lower your daily labour in pool skimming. In Australia and Queensland especially where the temperature is high throughout most of the year, evaporation is a substantial contributor to water loss. This can cause damage to pool skimmers and the pump system. Installing pool covers will effectively reduce the water loss that occurs when the pool isn’t in use.

Even if pool maintenance isn’t your worry you should still consider the added safety aspect of installing a pool cover. Not only will the cover protect your pool from leaves and other debris, but it will protect people and animals from falls and other accidents. For this reason, we have placed pool covers at the top of our list of accessories to get.

Pool Pumps

A pool pump is crucial in the every -day maintenance of your pool as it minds the swimming pool’s water circulation. It’s also one of the imperative components that keeps the pool in pristine condition and suitable for swimming. The pump will pull water from the pool and send it towards the filtration system, heater, and chlorinator for processing. The swimming pool pump will then return the processed water to the pool, ready for your family to enjoy. There is a wide variety of pool pumps to choose from so if you need help, head to our previous article where we explain how to pick the right swimming pool pump.

Pool Cleaning Supplies

Pool supplies

If you plan to keep your pool maintained in the old fashion way you’ll need to invest in a pool brush, skimmer or pool vacuum, as well as water testing strips and chemicals. Test strips are used to determine what chemicals need to be added to your pool in order to keep the water clean and bacteria-free.

A skimmer is a handy tool for picking up any debris that is floating on the top of the water.

A pool brush will be an essential prop if you get a buildup of algae in your pool. Dead algae will need to be brushed off and vacuumed up after treatment with an algaecide. There are different types of brushes for different types of swimming pools. It is best to get a brush for inground concrete pools if that’s what you’re having installed. You may also want to consider what brush to get for the different types of pool finishes.

Option two is to buy a pool robot that automatically moves through the water, cleaning it at pre-set intervals.

Pool Filters

You can think of pool filters as the kidneys of your body; their function is mainly to remove unwanted waste and toxins. Without a filter pump, bacteria and dirt will remain in the swimming pool and will quickly turn your pool into a breeding ground for diseases and make it unfit for swimming in. The pool filter will also assist in distributing the various pool chemicals. If you need help determining what pool filter is best suited to your pool, don’t hesitate to get in contact with your expert pool builder on the Gold Coast, we’d love to help!

First Aid Kit

Safety always comes first! Therefore it’s important to ensure you include a first aid kit in your pool package. But remember, having an aid kit in place is no good unless you make sure to check it regularly and fill up on the supplies. During pool season, which is almost year-round in Queensland, you may want to schedule an inventory of your first aid kit every few weeks.

At a minimum, your kit should include the following items:

  • Bandages
  • Gauze pads of different sizes
  • Insect sting relief pads and/or ointment
  • Antibacterial soap
  • Antiseptic cream and towelettes
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Cold compresses and/or instant icepacks
  • Sunscreen
